It is rare that a camera is met with a certain willingness, a warm hand, a guiding force through an unfamiliar space. This, though, in my experience, is how you get the shot. When our walls are let down, when the theater curtain is split into fragments of dance shoes and horsehair bows are zipping around dark corners– that is when I feel compelled to make an image. When I can lower my shutter, observe, wait, and hope.
This is how I document as non-invasively as possible. The camera has to be invited in. This is how my longer-term projects start.
